Sustainability Results
Our safety, health, environment and sustainability performance in 2008 featured some very positive results and also brought attention to areas that need more focus to achieve the kind of results we expect as a company in the future.
Employee Safety
Global Total Recordable Injury Rate (TRIR)
- Our TRIR of 0.55 was a 35% reduction from the previous year.
- Since 2004, we have reduced our number of work-related injuries and illnesses by half.
Global Vehicle Accident Rates
Our Total Vehicle Accident Rate (TVAR – accidents per million miles driven) declined 19% over the past five years.
We are tracking the Serious Vehicle Accident Rate (SVAR) to focus on our most serious accidents.
Waste Reduction
Our Global Waste Index compares the total amount of products manufactured to the waste generated by our production. It measures both our manufacturing efficiency and our ability to reduce waste.
Global Waste Index While production increased 5% our waste was cut 7.1%. Since 2004 our waste has decreased 15% while our production increased 15.2%.
Fines and Penalties
We track and report both the number and amount paid (in US dollars) for safety, health and environmental fines and penalties. The largest reason for the sharp increase in fines in 2008 was a single court case in the United Kingdom resulting in a $300,000 fine against our British subsidiary. Since the incident occurred, Nalco has thoroughly audited all the processes and procedures involved and made changes to keep events of this nature from occurring again.
Energy and Greenhouse Gases
Reducing energy use and the related emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) are important sustainable development commitments for Nalco. Since 1990, the base year for greenhouse gases under the Kyoto Protocol (a global commitment to reduce climate change by cutting these emissions) Nalco has reduced GHG releases nearly 20 percent. We are increasing our energy efficiency efforts and have set an objective that by the end of 2012 we will reduce our global energy use by 10 percent from 2007 levels. Because of the direct relationship between energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, we expect to also achieve a high single-digit reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Global Energy Efficiency
Our energy use decreased 3.2 percent in 2008 while production rose five percent. Since 2004, our production has increased 15.2 percent while energy consumption increased 2.3 percent. Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions Last year our greenhouse gas emissions declined 3.5 percent, while production increased 5 percent. Over the past five years our greenhouse emissions increased 2.3 percent, a much slower rate than our production increase of more than 15 percent over the same period.
