Behind the Ad
Gallatin Steel, a jount venture of ArcelorMittal and Gerdau Ameristeel, produces steel coils through the Compact Strip Process (CSP). The Direct Contact Water (DCW) system provides cooling water for both the caster and rolling mill in a single combined system. Nalco experts determined that Nalco oil separation technology could improve the DCW filtration system performance conserving water, energy and air for the mill as well as reducing the total cost of operation of the DCW system. Working together Nalco and Gallatin Steel save 179 million gallons of fresh water, 2.3 million kWhr of energy, 2,387 tons of CO2 from entering the environment and save $135,000 per year.
There are 20 species of frogs that inhabit Kentucky. Ghent, Kentucky is located on the Ohio River and wastewater from the DCW system is discharged into a surface waterway. Independent discharge permit testing proved that after the project was complete oil and grease and total suspended solids levels had both improved significantly. It seems that improved water quality also sustains frogs.
