Nalco Garyville Plant Named Louisiana Environmental Leadership Award Winner
Nalco (NYSE: NLC) announced that its plant in Garyville, La. has been honored by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for the facility’s environmental and pollution prevention efforts. It is the second straight year the plant has been recognized with an Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) Award.
The Garyville Plant implemented a program to better schedule production of similar product batches reducing the number of process/equipment clean ups between batches. The change reduced steam and electricity the plant used for heating water for cleanup and the electricity to operate pumps and agitators, saving approximately 4.8 billion BTUs of energy and more than 250 metric tons of related greenhouse gas emissions annually.
“As the world’s leading sustainability services company Nalco is committed to improving the environment by helping our customers operate more efficiently and reduce water and energy use,” said Garyville Plant Manager Carl Pasquarelli. “We think it’s equally important to enhance our own operations in the same way by improving operations and reducing our environmental footprint.”
The Nalco project was one of 18 highlighted in a ceremony in Baton Rouge for going above and beyond regulatory compliance to substantially improve the quality of the environment.
“The Environmental Leadership Program is a great way to recognize those who have worked to spearhead community outreach efforts, combat pollution or present educational programs that make a positive difference in the quality of Louisiana’s environment,” said DEQ Secretary Peggy Hatch. “The program also encourages students to participate in protecting their environment.”
The ELP began in 1995 as a cooperative effort between DEQ and participating companies in the state.
Today, any company, federal entity, municipality, school or university or individual committed to improving the quality of the state’s environment is eligible to join the program. For more information on the ELP visit the DEQ website at www.deq.louisiana.gov/elp.
