Nalco Water and Energy Saving System Passes Milestone
Cooling Water System Has Saved More Than 150 Billion Gallons Of Water Since Introduction...
Nalco Company has achieved an historic milestone with the installation of the 10,000th unit of its award-winning 3D TRASAR® Cooling Water Automation equipment.
The unit was installed to help manage the water in cooling towers at Cargill Incorporated’s corn milling plant in Dayton, Ohio. Advanced automation in cooling tower operations improves Cargill’s efficiency at more than 30 locations globally, saving the company more than 150 million gallons of water annually.
“At Cargill, we recognize that conserving natural resources is a key factor in our continued success,” said Mike Turner, natural resources manager, Cargill Corn Milling North America. “The 3D TRASAR Cooling Water Technology is a valuable part of the innovative technical and behavioral solutions that Cargill is employing to reduce water use and improve our performance.”
“Helping customers meet their sustainability goals while saving money is what we call eROIsm or environmental return on investment,” said Nalco Chairman and CEO J. Erik Fyrwald. “3D TRASAR technology is the latest example in our more than 80-year history of the many benefits we provide our customers, including reducing water use, improving energy efficiency and lowering our customers’ total cost of operation.”
The 3D TRASAR Cooling Water system won a United States Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 2008 for its ability to allow cooling towers to operate longer without adding new water, called make-up water, reducing industrial water consumption.
Combining innovative chemistry, advanced control and monitoring equipment and sophisticated modeling software, 3D TRASAR cooling water technology detects the conditions that can lead to scaling, corrosion and microbiological fouling in cooling towers, determines the appropriate response and delivers the proper treatment.
“The advanced technologies used in our 3D TRASAR cooling water system are protected by 18 patents,” says Dr. Manian Ramesh, Nalco Chief Technology Officer. “That includes our unique scale and corrosion solution that eliminates the use of heavy metals like zinc and Molybdenum while also reducing the discharge of phosphate into the environment.”
Since its introduction in 2004, 3D TRASAR Cooing Water Technology has saved an estimated 157 billion gallons of water worldwide, enough to provide for the basic annual water needs of more than 32 million people.
