Environmental Friendly Retarders for Styrene Manufacturing - Nalco's Green Retarder

In order to control unwanted monomer degradation when manufacturing styrene, a polymerization retarder is commonly added to the process. Typical products used for this purpose are dinitrophenols such as DNOC (di-nitro-ortho-cresol) or DNBP (di-nitro-sec-butyl-phenol).

Despite being effective in controlling polymerization, these retarders are extremely toxic. Oral LD50 values give an approximate idea:

Product            Oral LD50 - Rat (mg/kg)

DNOC        10

DNBP        58

Nalco offers a technical and cost effective “green” alternative to these toxic compounds. Under the Prism® umbrella, Nalco offers its innovative, environmentally friendly options as alternatives to nitro-compound derivatives.

With an Oral LD50 number superior to 2000mg/kg and proven in the entire range of operating conditions commercially found, these user-friendly compounds are registered under the main global EH&S product registries.

Our compounds have been validated in the key major styrene manufacturing processes and are offered with complete monitoring tools and local service support and follow-up. Appropriate replacement procedures have also been developed, making the substitution of the nitro-phenol compounds possible during the plant run.
