Prism® Styrene Vent Gas Compressor Antifoulant

In order to keep vacuum in the dehydrogenation section, styrene plants have to eliminate hydrogen and reaction off-gases. To achieve this, plants typically use oil-free screw drive type compressor machines.

Although this is not a fouling service, most operating units have a small amount of styrene carried over from the separator. In the compressor, this is subjected to a temperature rise, which in turn, causes vapour phase polymerization in the compressor itself (popcorn-like deposits) and some liquid phase polymerization in condensation at the discharge cooler.

The key to fouling control is good chemical protection introduced in the compressor suction using a suitable atomizing nozzle.

Nalco offers antifoulant programs to control and mitigate this equipment fouling. Contact us for more information.
